Christmas nails and eyes (plus bonus shoes!) for 2014

Friday, December 26th, 2014

As is somewhat of a tradition, I made up some fancy themed nails for Christmas this year.  I opted for red and silver this time, and used my remaining Christmas nail stickers to decorate them.  They turned out really well.

I alternated the silver glitter and red polish, carefully applied the stickers, and finished with a couple of coats of clear polish.

For my eyes, I used Lime Crime’s Siren (red) loose eyeshadow and applied it with a damp brush into the crease and eyelid, with signature sweep 😉  Then I used Chi Chi’s Cyber Vixen (silver) above the crease to the base of the brow bone (also with a damp brush).  Then I applied it again to the brow bone, but this time with a dry brush.  I also used a Chi Chi glitter eyeliner to add some sparkle.

And here I am with my wacky blue hair :)

And to finish off the look – sparkly shoes!

Mary Kay Makeover

Monday, December 22nd, 2014

My friend, Anita, is a Mary Kay consultant, and she offered to have a bit of a pamper day with me where I could try out some of the products and have a bit of fun.

I don’t usually use foundation on a day to day basis, but if I give myself enough time, I do like to wear it for special occasions, so it was good to try out some different techniques and get a bit of practice in.  I used the primer, which had a really nice silky feeling that ended with an almost powder finish; then a light foundation cream, and finished with a highlighting pen to hide any dark areas or spots.  The highlighting pen has pigments in it that catch the light and draw your eye, so you can use it to do some light contouring as well.  I also put on a light touch of blush.

We opted for a silver and blue eye makeup combination and I must say, the eyeshadows are really lovely to work with – very smooth and shimmery with lots of pigment.  I also used a navy cream eyeliner and plumped up my eyelashes with the lash primer and mascara.  The mascara had a really great brush that was excellent for getting right into the root of the lashes and also picking out the delicate lower ones.

The final touch was to line my lips and then fill them in with a lovely, neutral lip colour.

I’m quite happy with how it all turned out, and I’d definitely recommend you give Mary Kay makeup a try if you haven’t already.

Winged eyeliner is hard

Friday, December 12th, 2014

I love the winged eyeliner look, and I’ve often tried to recreate it. I know the principles, and understand the theory, but whatever the reason, it never looks quite right on me.  I think it’s due to my old lady eyes or something!

They look good with my eyes open, but when shut the wing looks wobbly and strange.  I suppose it shouldn’t matter because I’m not customarily walking around with my eyes shut, but it does bother me.

I guess it’s a matter of practice.  How are you with winged eyeliner? Have you mastered this technique yet?

Glitter adhesive trial

Tuesday, December 9th, 2014

Aaaaaages back I bought a bunch of random loose glitters from eBay and occasionally tinker with them, usually to poor effect.

Until I got a decent glitter adhesive.  Then things get a LOT more fun!

So this one is by Medusa’s Makeup, comes in a little clear pink pot, and is called The Fix.  It’s waxy, but quite light, and a little goes a long way.  Far better than trying to use various wet body glitters in the hope they would provide enough stick; or worse yet, using those horrible glitter creams I’ve mentioned!

Here’s me trying it out with some green and gold (Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!):

Sparkle sparkle!

Hello friends!  Bit of a different post this time :)

Liptember is a campaign raising funds and awareness for women’s mental health during the month of September. All funds raised during the month of September are donated to the CENTRE FOR WOMEN’S MENTAL HEALTH and LIFELINE.

There are a range of awesome lipstick colours you can buy online, or from participating retailers (e.g. myChemist). They are just $4.99 each and all proceeds go to the above charities.

If you’d like to make a donation (or join my team!), click on the link. Get yourself some funky lippy and support this very important cause.

Here are a few of my Liptember looks so far :)

Quite a long lasting red, I was pretty surprised given the price!

Green is more of a mint than I was expecting. Quite shimmery.

A trio of looks

Sunday, September 7th, 2014

Three different looks in one post today.

The first is using a loose purple/pink ChiChi eyeshadow powder.  I bought a stack of these on sale years ago and they just last for soooo long. I love them. They are highly pigmented with amazing shimmer. Definitely among my favourite eye makeups!

So for this first look I just loaded up a brush with colour and swished it over my entire eyelid and down to the inner corner.  I applied a white shimmery colour to above the brow bone, and a white eyeliner to my lower waterline.  I then applied a couple of coats of black mascara to both my upper and lower lashes.

The next look takes advantage of my Makeup Geek red gel eyeliner.  I used a creamy, shimmery eyeshadow by ChiChi called Cyber Vixen to cover my entire eye area, then brushed the eyelid with a darker silver.  I then applied the red liner along my upper lash line and out into a sweeping wing.  Mascara on the top lashes, and thats it.

The final look for today is one using BYS fluro palette in pink and purple. Nothing fancy really, but I like the bright complement of the two colours.  The look is finished off with a blue/purple eyeliner pencil to the lower waterline, and a bit of the pink smudged under the lower lashes.

Orange eyeliner by Lime Crime

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014

This is a fun look that I enjoyed wearing.  You may recall ages back I bought some Lime Crime bits and bobs, and one was an orange eyeliner called 6th Element. The Lime Crime eyeliners are quite vibrant and pigmented, and go on pretty well, but be careful as they are very wet and a bit runny.  This does mean you can get very fine lines, but you need to be patient and not load up the brush with too much liner.

For this look, I used the green from my BYS fluoro palette (definitely my favourite palette these days!).  I did a a big sweeping wing, and also brought the green under my lower lash line.  I used the fluoro yellow for the inner eye corner.  I used a greenish/blue eye pencil to line my lower waterline, and loaded my lashes with ChiChi black 3D Lashes mascara.

The look is finished off with a nice sweep of white eyeshadow to fill up to my brows, and a bit of brow filling using the brown from my ChiChi cream liner palette :)

A couple of looks

Sunday, August 31st, 2014

Looking back through my folder of makeup photos, I saw a couple of nice eyemakeup looks and thought I may as well put them together in one post.

The first is a purple eyeshadow look using ChiChi loose eyeshadow powder with an aqua blue glitter eyeliner (ChiChi). I really love the colour combination, and I particularly love that eyeliner, however, looking back at the photo I realise I’ve made an error I often make with eyeliner – not waiting for it to drive before I open my eye! If you don’t wait, you are likely to end up with a bit of eyeliner transferred to your upper lid, like I’ve done here. It’s not so bad for lighter colours, but with black gel eyeliner, it can be a real killer! Does anyone have any tips on how to repair that kind of mistake once you’ve already done all your eye makeup? I’d love to know your advice!

The second look is one using ChiChi again (it’s my favourite eyeshadow!), using shades of pink.  This time I used a really pale pink below the crease of my eyelid, then highlighted above with a bright pink.  I then lined my upper lash line with a pink cream liner (I have a little ChiChi set with a nice selection of colours).  I also lined my lower lashline with the pink shadow, and filled my lower waterline with Nyx white eyeliner (the shade is called “milk”).  If you look carefully at the closed eye picture, you can see I’ve transferred some of the bright pink from above the crease, down to the lower area near my inner eye corner.  I have this problem a lot when I do my eyes.  Perhaps I just need to take it a bit slower and really let the eyeshadow set before opening my eye.  Easier said than done when you are rushing off to work in the morning!

Bright purple and green

Friday, August 29th, 2014

This look uses two colours from the BYS fluoro palette, and the ChiChi black eyeliner pen.  I also used Lime Crime’s Airborne Unicorn lipstick.

The fluoro palette is really great for bright pops of colour, especially if you apply with a wet brush.  This just gives you stronger pigment and loads up the colour.

I am still learning eyeliner techniques, and a steady hand is a definite must.  I’m not sure I’m a fan of the ChiChi eyeliner pen but I will persevere.  Pros: very fine point gives you excellent thin line for detail and allows you to really get into the inner eye and between the lashes; very black.  Cons: it dries out fast, hard to load up the colour for a thick line.  I think the best approach is to combine it with a gel liner. Will have to practice that!

Black and white eyes

Friday, December 20th, 2013

This is another simple look, but makes for fun contrast times 😛

First I covered my entire eye lid up to the brow in white eyeshadow.  This provided both the bright top section and a base for the black.

Next I very carefully applied a shimmery black eyeshadow with a wet brush.  This allowed me to make the sharp cut in crease shape with no blending.  It also lets you fill in any gaps that dry brushes sometimes leave.

Takes a bit of time and care to apply the black without smudging into the white, but well worth it!

I blended the wing with my finger to get a softer effect, and smudged a bit at the inner corner (so it looks silvery rather than black or white).

White eyeliner on the lower water line is a must when using very dark eyeshadow (at least for me), as it opens up the eye and makes it look bigger.  I also used mascara on the lower lashes for the same reason.

Because I had heavy eye makeup, I opted for pale glossy pink lips to balance out the overall look.

Hmm I think I want to go blonde again, I like the colour in this pic (plus will help hide all my grey hairs!!)
